Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP)
Virtual & In-Person | Therapist Guided Listening Program
The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is an evidence-based, five-hour listening therapy based on Polyvagal Theory. At 3 Rivers Counselling in St. Stephen, New Brunswick, we offer SSP through our Quiet Mind Program – a therapist-guided, insurance-eligible way to calm your nervous system and improve emotional regulation, available online across Canada and internationally.

Introducing the
Quiet Mind Program: Our Way of Delivering SSP
At 3 Rivers Counselling, we offer the Safe and Sound Protocol through our Quiet Mind Program.
As one of the few certified SSP providers in Atlantic Canada, we support children, teens, and adults across Canada and worldwide.
Our team is trauma-informed, EMDR- and Polyvagal-informed, and neurodiversity-affirming, so SSP is always offered within a safe therapeutic relationship – not just as an app you use on your own.

Polyvagal Theory:
The Science Behind the SSP
Polyvagal Theory, developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, explains how our autonomic nervous system constantly scans for cues of safety or danger.
When our body feels safe, we can rest, connect, think clearly, and heal. When it feels threatened, we shift into fight, flight, or shutdown, even when there is no real danger.
The Safe and Sound Protocol is a practical, sound-based application of Polyvagal Theory. By sending “cues of safety” through music, SSP helps the nervous system move out of chronic defense and into a more regulated, connected state.
