I believe that counselling has the power to be a transformative and empowering experience. I also believe that connecting with a counsellor can be a healthy way of maintaining balance. Life can present us with challenges that feel overwhelming and these stressors can impact our overall health and wellness. Counselling is a space without judgment, where your voice can be heard and where your struggles can be shared. I am strongly influenced by humanistic philosophy. But, my practice also draws from evidence based therapeutic interventions including CBT, ACT, Mindfulness, Motivational Interviewing, and TF-CBT. I work with people who are experiencing stress, anxiety, impacts of trauma, depression and challenging life transitions.
Counselling and Psychotherapy
It's important for your therapy to be a good fit so I offer a 30 minute initial consult to all of my clients. This consult is a fairly informal conversation and it should help you get to know me and to begin to feel a bit more comfortable with our therapeutic relationship and space. I will ask some questions about the issue or issues that you would like to discuss in therapy and review confidentiality and privacy with you. This is also your chance to ask questions you have about my style of practice and my skill set. At the end of our consult, I will provide you with any paperwork that we will need before our first therapy session.
Therapy Session (Currently offering online sessions)
In our 60 minute therapy session we will review your plan and goals for therapy. This session is a non-judgmental space for you to share what is on your mind, and to explore issues past and present that are impacting the life you want. While I bring an eclectic mix of therapeutic styles to best fit your situation, I endeavour to meet you with a warm and empathetic approach that is supported by evidence based interventions. I always want you to know what we are doing and why it works, and to empower you. This is your time! Your collaboration and feedback help to shape these sessions.
“When a person realizes he has been deeply heard, his eyes moisten. I think in some real sense he is weeping for joy. It is as though he were saying, "Thank god, somebody heard me. Someone knows what it's like to be me”
I began my career as an educator because of my own love of learning and I bring this passion for learning to my work as a therapist. I approach counselling from two lenses.
First, I see counselling through a humanistic lens. I see the counselling relationship as an opportunity to shed the filters and masks of everyday life. A place where you can allow all the pieces of you to be heard without judgement. And, in being heard without judgment, you have the opportunity to grow, learn and heal.
But, I also have deep appreciation for structured, symptom-focused therapies that are often referred to as 'evidence based therapeutic interventions'. When faced with the symptoms of depression, anxiety, panic attacks, and traumatic life events, we often yearn for a concrete solution.....'what can I do to feel better?' Therapies such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, and ACT offer sets of skills, and tools that can empower people to 'do things that help them feel better'.
My goal is to tailor an approach that meets your needs.
I provide secure and easy to navigate online video sessions. I am also happy to discuss secure chat and phone sessions. Please send me a message. I will arrange a brief phone call to answer questions and arrange your first appointment.
